This is the first sentence of the novel "The Martian". The movie based on the book is one of my favorites (the standard is that you can watch it several times).
This is a story about how to escape from a difficult situation . Matt Damon was left alone on Mars. According to the plan, the next spacecraft will not be able to fly to Mars again in four years.
The number one survival issue is: food.
The emergency food of his companions together is enough for him to eat for 300 days;
Save 1/4 of each meal, extend to 400 days;
1060 days to go.
Fortunately he is a botanist, so planning to grow potatoes requires the following key elements:
soil;
fertilizer;
planting area;
water;
planting method.
It was calculated that the harvested potatoes would keep Matt Damon alive for another 90 days.
What if there are 970 days left?
Faced with a bad hand, the actor said:
"This is the end of the matter. There is only one way. I have to do some research to solve this mess."
Ridley Scott was 78 years old when he directed the film, and it was tough, sharp, and optimistic.
At the end of the credits, Matt Damon puts the finishing touch:
"Sometimes, everything goes against you. All the bad things happen together, and you might think, that's it, that's where I'm going. Faced with this situation, you either accept it or find a way to solve it. This is the essence of everything. To solve problems, you think of various ways to solve one problem, and then you solve the next problem, and the cycle goes back and forth, and when you solve enough problems, you can go home. "
2. Objectives of Operation Smash
Build a sense of urgency and initiate key decisions and action plans to address life-threatening competitive challenges.
At the end of 1979, Intel's microprocessor, the 8086, was being replaced by the faster and easier-to-program Motorola 68000, and the company was again in huge trouble.
The reality is: there's no time to rebuild the 8086's strengths.
How to beat a strong opponent with a bad hand?
The following is a replay of the battle.
Strategy : Win by creating new narrative methods.
Compared with Motorola, Intel's "advantage" analysis:
Broad product range and system performance;
Excellent technical support competes with low cost of ownership;
With the help of Intel's external equipment, related products can enter the market faster and at lower cost;
Engineers can work more efficiently with design aids from Intel Corporation;
Compared with Motorola, Intel is a technology leader, focusing on the research and development of memory chips, microprocessors and operating systems;
Who do customers call when something goes wrong? Who do customers expect to work with?
Next, put the above ideas together with concrete implementations:
"Publish future catalogs of products";
"Develop a sales promotion plan for 50 seminars - attendees will receive a product catalog";
...
In the campaign, dubbed Operation Smash, Intel hasn't tweaked any of its products . OKR is the secret weapon that supercharges the organization and pushes it forward.
What are OKRs?
O is Objectives, KR is Key Results, OKR is Objectives and Key Results, that is, the goal and key results method.
OKR is a strategic objective task system, a set of management tools and methods for defining objectives and tracking their completion, invented by Intel Corporation.
An OKR consists of two main components: a clear goal that requires extreme focus and a number of key results that quantify that goal.
Andy Grove explained:
The two key words of this kind of management by objectives are "objectives" and "key results", which correspond to two purposes respectively: the objectives are the direction, and the key results need to be evaluated, but the end result is obvious, and there is no need to appear "I did it. This, or not at all?" That debate, yes or no, is as simple as that.
Intel mobilizes the power of the entire company to develop strategies and turn them into actionable, collaborative projects.
Below are the "Operation Smash" OKRs and related engineering OKRs introduced by Intel Corporation in the second quarter of 1980.
Policymakers' instructions to Intel's management team were straightforward: " We're going to win in the 16-bit microprocessor market. We're committed to that. "
Until these matters are effectively completed, they should be considered priorities throughout the company. As a company valued at billions of dollars, the decisive turning point occurred at that moment. The scene is reminiscent of Evergrande in 2008. During that time, Xu Jiayin's life was not easy, and the financial pressure was enormous.
When the market was generally on the sidelines, Xu made a decision of 15% off the national real estate. On the second day, the general managers of the various branches of Evergrande gathered for a meeting. On the third day, the overall Latest Mailing Database marketing went out. 2.1 billion yuan was collected from the operation.
When faced with a crisis, businesses need a system that can quickly drive transformation. Those classic business battle cases are brilliant now, but they were full of chicken feathers at the time.
At the beginning of the "smashing operation", Intel relied on a "future product catalog" that drew pie for users, and Evergrande's discounts and promotions may not even make money back. It all looks like a bad hand.
However, when people zoom in and out, they will see an epic victory.
The predicament in the business field is more likely to fall into the "all-or-nothing" game than survival on Mars. On the contrary, the secret weapon OKR is interesting:
achieve short-term focus;
Wake up everyone to accelerate;
Highlight the long-term vision.
3. Enlarge the idea 10 times
OKRs are a set of management methods that ensure that the power of the entire organization is focused on getting things done that matter to everyone.
